The Torrey Pine tree, Pinus torreyana, is the rarest pine growing in the United States. There are two native subspecies populations of this tree, one growing on Santa Rosa Island and another at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Though not a flowering plant, it is the namesake of the park. It foliage consists of long needles in a cluster of five. The pine contains numerous pollen producing short lived male cones and longer lasting, thus growing larger female cones that contain seeds. The pine is also grown and sold at nurseries as an ornamental.
